Campus Bockenheim: Jury reaches decision on architecture

On December 13, 2010, the jury announced the winners of the architectural competition for the design of the new buildings on the former Campus Bockenheim area. ABG FRANKFURT HOLDING and GWH Gemeinnützige Wohnungsgesellschaft mbH Hessen are going to build 200 apartments and owner-occupied flats according to plans by architects Jens Happ, Stefan Forster and Karl Dudler. The development of the new construction project, negotiations with the federal state of Hesse for the purchase of the plot, which is currently being used as a parking lot, and the architectural competition were all handled by UPG Urbane Projekte GmbH.

Nine architectural firms submitted entries to the anonymous competition for the design of the planned residential buildings and retail space at the junction of Sophienstraße and Gräfstraße. ABG FH and GWH, a subsidiary of Heleba-Projektentwicklungsgesellschaft OFB, are planning to erect a total gross floor space of 27 800 m² in the Passive House standard. In line with the overall development concept, the invitation to tender put special emphasis on sustainability and energy efficiency. Another requirement of ABG FH was that the architecture blend in harmonically with its immediate environment. The designs were also to incorporate the Gründerzeit typologies found in Sophienstrasse, with the façades structured so as to expose a multitude of individual buildings.
